Often golfers think if they could only drive the ball farther, putt better, get up and down from 10 yards in or some other quest, their game would improve. This may be true, but keep in mind searching for a swing fix is only half of the equation. We need to investigate what is keeping us from achieving the goal. Is it a matter of fitness, practice time, the clubs we are using, playing more golf or understanding how to make our best swing? It could be any one of a number of reasons and now is the time to search for answers.
Here is an example. Maybe you had trouble with your flexibility and that prevented you from staying in a good posture. As a result, sometimes you made solid contact with the ball and sometimes you did not. Instead of facing another hit or miss golf season make a plan now to work on improving your flexibility. Small steps like taking an introduction to yoga class or starting a flexor program and practicing what you have learned throughout the winter can help you make improvements next golf season.
Maybe it was not taking enough time to practice. Learning time management skills over the winter could free up the necessary time you need to practice when the new golf season is upon us. For others it might be a budgetary concern preventing you from buying clubs that fit you, taking golf lessons or joining a golf club. Saving a little bit each week between now and next golf season could provide you with the necessary revenue to reach this goal by next season.
Too often we wait until the new season is upon us and fall into our same old habits of wishing and hoping our game was better. This year start the process now to remove the roadblocks that have been keeping you from playing your best golf. The old saying “If you do what you have always done, you will get what you always have gotten” applies to your golf game. Identify what obstacles are preventing you from playing your best golf and start slowly making the necessary changes. Don’t hesitate to contact your local LPGA or PGA Professional to assist you in determining what you can do in the off-season to help you enjoy the great game of golf next season.
